If you’re looking for something to do that’s a little bit different this Christmas, look no further than the Five Sisters Zoo Illuminations. This stunning event lets you experience the zoo like never before, with beautiful festive lights, interactive exhibits, and the chance to see some incredible animals up close.

Taking a trip to the zoo at night is a pretty cool experience anyway, but the festive decorations take it to the next level. We’ve been along a few times to the Illuminations at Five Sisters Zoo and have had a wonderful time in the past. This year however, the zoo teamed up with a brand-new lighting partner, and it really shows.

The light displays are spectacular, with the paths lit with Christmas lights and lighting installations around the zoo, and even a couple of interactive light exhibits like a giant teddy bear that lights up and giggles. The team honestly have pulled out all the stops this year, creating a little bit of Christmas magic.

Animals After Dark

While some of the zoo’s residents are snuggled up for the night, there are still lots of animals to see. During our visit, we saw the lion snoozing in his bed and the lemurs all snuggled up together.

The wolves were roaming their enclosure and we saw the lynx prowling, the cutest little foxes being their adorable wee selves, the bats flying around and the penguins swimming. We even caught a glimpse of the zoo’s new resident, Baloo the rescue bear.

It’s a rare treat to see these animals in a nocturnal setting. It felt like we were peeking into their secret lives after dark.

Tasty Treats

You’ll also find some food stalls offering winter warmers like burgers, pizza, churros, chips, and hot drinks to keep everyone cozy. And obviously since it is very much the season, there are marshmallows ready to toast over a big fire pit, which also serves as a good heater because ooft it is chilly out there!

There are also a few rides for younger children like a little mini pirate ship, a helter skelter and some little cars to drive on.

Five Sisters Zoo Illuminations is on until the 23rd of December 2024. You can book slots on the Five Sisters Zoo website, and there is also the option to visit Santa’s grotto in December.

The Verdict

We’re big fans of Five Sisters Zoo at any time of year, but visiting at night with the illuminations is a completely different experience. It’s gorgeously festive, and a little bit magical.

The combination of twinkling lights, animals, and Christmas vibes makes for a wonderful evening. Wrap up warm, grab a hot chocolate and have fun!
